Dental Sealants

Easy Cavity Prevention

Even adults can have lapses in their dental care, so it’s unfair to expect children to be perfect. Often, despite excellent oral hygiene, the deep grooves in the back teeth can make it impossible to remove all bacteria, acid, and plaque. That combination is lethal when it comes to decay, and once we get to that point, the only solution is a filling or, in severe cases, a crown.

This is why we recommend dental sealants be applied to the back teeth of our patients who have been deemed “high risk” for tooth decay. First, we clean and sterilize the teeth. Next, we apply a thin plastic coating that’s usually white or clear. A curing light bonds the sealant to the tooth in just seconds. Because there are no shots or drilling required, and no removal of tooth structure, the procedure is completely painless!
